How to Reduce Signature Image to 10-20 KB — Step-by-Step for Exam Forms

The Signature Challenge

Most Indian exam portals require signatures at 140x60 pixels, 10-20 KB, in JPEG format. This is an extremely small file with very specific requirements.

Step 1: Prepare Your Signature

  1. Sign with black ink on white paper (blue ink may cause issues)
  2. Sign in your normal running/cursive style (NO capital letters)
  3. Sign clearly without touching the edges of the paper
  4. Use a thick-tipped pen for visibility

Step 2: Capture the Signature

  • Best method: Scan at 300 DPI, crop tightly around the signature
  • Alternative: Photograph with phone in good lighting, no shadows

Step 3: Clean Up

  1. Crop to just the signature (remove excess white space)
  2. Adjust contrast to make the signature darker and background whiter
  3. Convert to grayscale if the image has color tints

Step 4: Resize and Compress

  1. Set dimensions to 140x60 pixels
  2. Set target file size range: 10-20 KB
  3. The tool will adjust JPEG quality to fit within the range
  4. Download the result

The RRB 30 KB Minimum Problem

Railway (RRB) exams require signatures of 30-49 KB — but a 140x60 JPEG at reasonable quality is only 3-8 KB. The spec resizer solves this by increasing JPEG quality to pad the file size to the required minimum.

Common Rejection Reasons

  1. Capital letters — "JOHN SMITH" instead of "John Smith" in cursive
  2. Blue ink — May appear faded during verification scanning
  3. Wrong format — PNG instead of JPEG
  4. Wrong dimensions — Even 141x60 may be rejected
  5. Outside KB range — 9 KB or 21 KB both get rejected
