Google Docs to PDF — Best Export Settings and Common Issues

How to Export Google Docs as PDF

  1. Open your document in Google Docs
  2. File > Download > PDF Document (.pdf)
  3. The PDF is generated and downloaded

Common Issues and Fixes

Fonts Change in PDF

Google Docs uses web fonts that may not embed properly. Fix:

  • Use standard fonts (Arial, Times New Roman, Roboto)
  • Or use the "Print" method: Ctrl+P > Save as PDF

Images Are Blurry

Google Docs compresses images when you paste them. Fix:

  • Insert original high-resolution images
  • Use "Insert > Image" instead of paste

Page Breaks Are Wrong

Fix:

  • Use explicit page breaks (Insert > Break > Page break)
  • Do not rely on spacing to push content to next page

Table Formatting Breaks

Complex tables may not export perfectly. Fix:

  • Simplify table structure
  • Use consistent column widths
  • Avoid merged cells when possible

Headers/Footers Missing

Check that headers and footers are set up correctly:

  • Insert > Headers & Footers > Header/Footer
  • Different first page option if needed

Reducing PDF Size After Export

Google Docs PDFs can be surprisingly large (especially with images). After exporting:

  1. Open the PDF in a compression tool
  2. Apply basic compression (typically saves 10-30%)
  3. Download the smaller version
