Honest guide to improving slightly blurry photos and understanding the limits of photo sharpening.

How to Fix Blurry Photos — What Works and What Does Not

The Honest Truth About Blurry Photos

Sharpening tools can improve slightly soft images but cannot fix truly blurry ones. Here is what to expect:

What Sharpening Can Fix

  • Photos that are slightly soft from lens issues
  • Images that lost sharpness during resizing
  • Scanned documents that look a bit fuzzy
  • Photos from older/lower-quality cameras

What Sharpening Cannot Fix

  • Motion blur from camera shake
  • Completely out-of-focus images
  • Heavy compression artifacts
  • Extremely low resolution images

How Sharpening Works

Sharpening increases contrast along edges in the image. It does not add new detail — it makes existing edges more prominent.

The algorithm:

  1. Detect edges (areas of contrast change)
  2. Increase contrast at those edges
  3. Light side gets lighter, dark side gets darker
  4. Result: edges appear sharper

Best Sharpening Settings

Image Type Amount Tip
Portrait 20-40% Light touch to avoid skin texture issues
Landscape 40-60% More aggressive for fine details
Text/Document 60-80% High sharpening helps readability
Already sharp 0-10% Little to no sharpening needed

Prevention Is Better

  • Hold the camera steady or use a tripod
  • Use faster shutter speeds in low light
  • Tap to focus on your subject
  • Use burst mode and pick the sharpest frame
  • Clean your camera lens
